I have zoo, but not looz ...  without which zoo is somewhat useless.

The only thing looz can do that zoo cannot do is execute archived
binaries without extracting them first.  Zoo can do lots of things that
looz can't do (including make archives); in particular, Zoo can extract
what it creates, and can extract pieces out of damaged archives (if you
know where the pieces start).  Check out the zoo documentation, or just
type "zoo h" to get a summary of what you can do.
