[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] PCROFF posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc

dmt@mtunb.ATT.COM (Dave Tutelman) (11/23/88)

Dues to a significant Email response, I've posted PCroff to

	comp.binaries.ibm.pc

Since the group is moderated, it may take a week or so to appear;
please be patient.

ROFF is a simple text formatter. Its lineage is:
  A superset of the text formatter described in
	Kernighan and Plauger's "Software Tools". (Actually roff
	existed when the book was written, as did troff.)
	The book credits Doug McIlroy as the inventor of roff.
  Predecessor to, and roughly a subset of, nroff and troff.

The major limitations of ROFF are:
   -	No number registers, strings, diversions, or traps.
   -	Macros don't take arguments.
   -	No font control (my PCROFF has fixed that).
Obviously, it can't handle the MM or MS macros with these limitations,
but it's a nice, simple, fairly fast formatter. I find it useful,
as do my kids.
