I believe that he and his brother both discovered TNT (tri-nitro-toluene),
and that his brother was killed in one of their experiments using it.
>From that accident, he acknowledged the destructive power of their
discovery and he founded the Nobel Peace prize to encourage others to
turn their inventiveness towards those things that would promote peace and
benefit mankind.
How's that?
