[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Archive list

sim@phri.UUCP (Kristian Simsarian) (02/16/89)

I received a lot of responses both of archives and request for
info. Here is the basic stuff I compiled. I am not posting the
instructions for "How to do anonymous ftp", but if you can't figure it
out from what's here send me mail and maybe I can be of more help.

The info below is compiled from bits of other peoples mail to
me, I tried to make it fairly coherent...

The biggest and most popular (very busy) seems to be the simtel
site listed below. It is a DEC-20 machine running Tops-20 and may seem
unruly from UNIX, there are some special intructions below for simtel.

One thing I am still looking for is a good MIDI archive.

Disclaimer: I have no connection with any of these sites, I am
just passing along address info of possible archives.

List of FTPable sites updated September 14 1988 by Anthony Stieber If
you have any corrections or additions to this list please email them to
me <astieber@csd4.milw.wisc.edu>, so I can collect them into a new list.
Do anything you want with this document.

Note: these address were collected from various NetNews groups, most have not
been tested for validity. If 'anonymous' dosen't work try 'ftp' and 'public'.
This list is not sorted or organized in any way.
If a specific password is neccesary see 'pw:' in the list.
All site are probably loginid:anonymous, if that dosn't work try ftp or guest.

SIMTEL:

This was the most mentioned site, it also seems to be the most popular,
as it is very hard to get a connection. You have best luck if you
try at some time like 3:00AM.
-sim-

You can obtain these files using the InterNet file transfer protocol,
FTP (described in a following paragraph), with user-name "anonymous".
For a login password, use your host-name or any other string of
printing characters.

To obtain directory listings, connect to SIMTEL20 via FTP and do this:
  get pd2:<cpm>cpm.crclst
  get pd2:<cpmug>cpmug.crclst

--------

(1) Connect via FTP using "anonymous" login.

(2) Enter the command "cd PD1:<MSDOS>"

(3) Enter the commands "mget MSDOS.CRCLST*" and "mget MSDOS.DIRLST*" to
download the latest listings of programs, their locations in the directory
structure, their sizes in bytes and their CRC's in hex (the former) and a
listing of the MSDOS directories (the latter). This should be using the ASCII
mode.

(4) When you decide what you want to download, you will need to change
directories using the following format:

	cd PD1:<MSDOS.DIRECTORY>

So, to change to the GRAPHICS directory, as you have probably by now guessed,
you would enter "cd PD1:<MSDOS.GRAPHICS>". Of course, once there, you can do
an "ls" to make sure that you're in the right place. For some odd reason,
after I change directories, I get some bizarre "...enter password to connect
to it" message which I ignore now, since it doesn't seem to have anything to
do with my ability to download.

(5) ***VERY IMPORTANT*** If the file is text, use the ASCII mode as usual,
but if it is binary, enter the "tenex" command, *not* the "binary" command,
before the "get <filename>" command.

(6) The files will arrive as ARC format archives. You will need some version
of an ARC format archive extractor to use the programs.
