Does anyone know if there is an operating system for IBM type machines
that is similar to SUN 4.0 or even Xerox Star systems? Please let me know.

If you mean SUN OS 4.0, this is an implementation of UNIX. In that case,
get MINIX of some public domain BBS (I am really sorry I cannot point
you to one, since I do not use them). If you want to pay for it,
MKS Toolkit implements "UNIX" on top of DOS (even leave out COMMAND.COM
if you so desire) which is fairly full-featured. It goes for around
$180 or so.

MINIX is not public domain, it is a V7 UN*X clone that is
a case study of how to write / build a O/S. It is available
from prentice hall for 110 $.

Can anyone else point to one? I have need of this too.

Thanks in advance.

MINIX is not in the public domain. It sometimes appears to be, because

a) Prentice-Hall is more concerned with selling Tanenbaum's textbook
    (which includes the source code)
b) because of (a), they allow (encourage) BBS'es, USENET, etc. to
    distribute upgrades to the code.

Some will disagree with me, but I see it as more a hacker's OS than a
produciton tool. For more info, archive sites, etc., try comp.os.minix.

MINIX is NOT public domain! If you want a copy, you must get one from
Prentice-Hall for $80. I'd also suggest that you get the book _Operating
Systems: Design and Implimentation_, which is an OS textbook written
by the MINIX author. MINIX was originally designed to be a "teaching"
OS, and as such, the full source code is included with the above book
(in printed, not machine-readable, form). It also has instructions
for MINIX, including the default root password. Note that the MINIX
binaries and sources do NOT come with any documentation; you must get
the book if you want to know how to use it. Also note that MINIX
is not intended to be a "real-world" OS; and as such, does not have
that many programs available for it. It also is not System V compatable,
but instead "sort of kinda" V7 compatable. You won't find a SunOS 4.0
clone in MINIX.

The book is $40, ISBN 0-13-637406-9, by Andrew S. Tanenbaum (Prentice-Hall,
1987).

If you want "real" Unix for your computer, get either Interactive Unix
or SCO Xenix.

Note that the MKS Toolkit is not "real" Unix, but instead is a package
of Unix-like utilities (and a Korn shell clone) that runs over MS-DOS.
You still run MS-DOS programs, have MS-DOS file naming restrictions, etc.

Dion is mistaken. Minix is NOT(!!) public domain. If any bbs actualy
has minix posted, the sysop should be informed that this is wrong...!
While the licence agreement for Minix is generous about sharing the files
with friends, this should not be taken as a license to post the files as
though they were public domain.
