[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] raster files

clark@umn-cs.CS.UMN.EDU (Robert P. Clark) (05/01/89)

Don't yell at me, I know this is the wrong newsgroup, but the Sun
newsgroup is moderated and takes FOREVER to get a response, so I'll
ask here (it'll never happen again).

Are there any ftp-sites that have Sun raster images?

[BTW, posting to a moderated newsgroup causes the
message to be sent to the moderator, even if you also
			post to unmoderated groups.

However, I have one site that might help:
			xanth.cs.odu.edu. tww]

e-mail me please,

[and cc: me as well. tww]

I received two replies to the question, the relevant parts of which are
included here:

I have 8 high resolution Sun raster images available via anonymous ftp
from pprg.unm.edu (path:/pub/images/color/sun_raster_high_res). I also
have many other raw images that you can convert to Sun rasters using the
two source files I also have available (path:/pub/images/color/src).
The sources, though, only work on color images.

There are READMEs in each directory which I strongly recommend you look
at.

There are a lot of Portable Bitmap (pbm) images on expo.lcs.mit.edu in
the directory contrib/poskbitmaptars. The file contrib/pbm.tar.Z
contains utilities to manipulate and convert between different types of
images, so you can convert them to Sun rasterfiles, which is the form we
prefer to store them in (actually compressed rasterfiles) because it
uses up so much less space.

A similar set of utilities for colour images are the Fuzzy Pixmap (fbm)
utilities which allow you to do all sorts of fun things to images. You
can convert images to Sun rasterfiles. Since it reads in GIF, you can
grab gif images from the various sites that have them
(surya.waterloo.edu, ssyx.ucsc.edu, hubcap.clemson.edu, sbcs.sunysb.edu,
a.cs.uiuc.edu) and convert/scale/dither them.

With these two packages, you are pretty well armed to sally forth into
netland and get images, since you can convert them into formats that you
can manipulate.
