Before the TV show was a Gerald McBoing Boing record, by
The Great Gildersleeve. It was a sound-effects record
with a story in couplets, something like this (lots of
haze and omissions...can anyone do this right?)
This is the story of Gerald McCoy [McCloy?]
And the strange things that happened to that little boy --
[more lines here?]
They say it all started when Gerald was two;
That's the age kids start talking, least most of them do.
[more lines here?]
...but the very first words to come out of his head,
Gerald didn't say [Ma?], he said {FX: garbage can turned over} instead.
...and this goes on. I recall a happy ending with Gerald winding up
making his sounds on a radio show after being recruited by a fellow
..."I'm from the {FX: NBC chimes} radio station."
Gildersleeve had a great laugh, and I always wondered what else
he did. I don't expect you youngsters to remember any of this.
Afraid to count the candles on my cake,
