[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Missing Parts - Why?

twb@cbnewsh.ATT.COM (thomas.w.beattie) (07/17/89)

Why are there so many instances of missing parts on c.b.i.p?
Just today:
	PC-OMEGA SUPPORT files - Part 2 only
	KFORTUNE - Part 2 only
	SFS - Parts 1 thru 4 and 6

Where do these parts get lost?
How can the problem be corrected?

I'm checking. They are going out OK from here.

I rely on feedback to ibmpc-repost@bsu-cs.bsu.edu to find out what
reposts are needed.

Our site didn't receive these either. If someone out there did receive
them, could you please re-post them somewhere, say maybe alt.sources?
Better yet, would the moderator of cbip re-post them?

There are some serious connectivity problems with some Arpanet hosts.
Rahul, I suggested you have a chat with the SysAdmin at iuvax. He told
me last week that his purdue connection wasn't working.

Rahul, there are ways to bypass this route. If you're interested, send me
mail.

Here as well. Lots of things are coming up missing -- but only in
comp.binaries.ibm.pc! For example, all 20 parts of Omega showed up here,
intact.

What's going on? We're quite well connected, and usually don't have this
kind of trouble.

Undoubtedly there are often missing parts, usually the result
of weak links (temporarily, of course) in the network
(transmission chain) -- but often the parts just come out of
order. (If part one of kfortune is indeed missing, however,
I'd like a copy.)

Even a follow-up article to a similar complaint that I sent out
a few weeks ago seems to have fallen into the same black hole. To
repeat the essence of that, we get only about two thirds of what
is posted (e.g. parts 1 and 2 of zoo2.0, parts 2 and 3 of zoo2.01
on its first post, etc. Frustrating, to say the least).
I wonder if one or several of the "backbone" sites are getting
so overloaded that they periodically "throw up their hands in
despair" and simply rm or "mail nul" everything in their transfer
queues.

No idea; I'm a user, not a net guru. Any ideas, news gurus?
Could us users help somehow, say by not posting so much (but
communication is the reason for the net ...), or can we cut out
some of the "noise" groups (but the "noise" groups are generally
fun for at least a few of us, or they wouldn't exist), or .... I'm
stuck there. Carry on, netlanders.

If they are 'coming up' they can't be 'missing'!!!

I am a user on iuvax, which is the newsfeed for the machine that
c.b.i.p. lives on (bsu-cs). There has been some difficulty lately in
communications, so that these missing pieces never even got to first
base (that's us), let alone out to the rest of you. Both Rahul and my
site's news admin. are aware of the problem.

figment of mine.

Count this as a vote for a repost of vpic part 2 (to comp.binaries.ibm.pc)
