It has come to my attention that a newsgroup of solely .GIF files
would do fairly well. Unfortunately, I have very little knowledge of how
such things are started. Any help?

While I would love to see this group come to life, I don't think that the net could stand the extra traffic involved. Whilst it can be argued that binaries are useful, I doubt that the same could be said about pictures. Sorry to be so negative, but I don't feel that the benefit justifies the extra cost. -- Iain McWilliams Inmos Ltd, Bristol | EMail(UK) ukc!inmos!mcwill ---------------------------------------| or mcwill@inmos.co.uk The opinions above are my personal | Internet: @col.hp.com:mcwill@inmos-c views and do not refelect Inmos policy.| UUCP:(US) uunet!inmos-c!mcwill

We have had this discussion in the past - there is a very strong feeling in the net community that the volume (high) vs. benefit (low) ratio is too high to warrant such a group. The danger is multiplied by making such a group a subtree off of comp.binaries.ibm.pc - this could cause a number of sites that aren't too happy about carrying binaries (since they only benefit the user's of one type of machine) to prune c.b.i.p totally. -- Simcha Lerner Kurzweil Applied Intelligence PLEASE NOTE ADDRESS: NO RETURN MAIL VIA bbn PLEASE UUCP address: kurz-ai!simcha@talcott.harvard.edu or: ...{uunet,rutgers,ames}!harvard!talcott!kurz-ai!simcha

Unfortunately, I have very little knowledge of how > such things are started. Any help? I think this is a great idea. However I think that one ought to be more generic than .GIF files. I would propose something like comp.graphics.pictures, which would serve as: (a) A group for posting of programs for conversion between gfx formats, (b) A group for posting pictures in various format, including, PS, EPS, GIF, TIF, Tek4010, and others. It would allow room for vector based images like maps and fonts. I believe that such a group would be quite useful. -- Alexander Pruss, at one of: Department of Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Mathematics, or Physics University of Western Ontario pruss@uwovax.uwo.ca pruss@uwovax.BITNET A5001@nve.uwo.ca
