[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Need help with WORD 5.0, VGA and serial mouse !

roessli@sc2a.unige.ch (David Roessli) (08/21/89)

I don't know if any of you Microsoft people read this, but here's a question
for you anyhow:

	- How can one install WORD 5.0 to work properly with a VGA screen
adapter (STB) and a LOGITECH mouse (on a serial port) ?

I just can seem to manage it. I tend to get all sorts of garbage (ASCii >127)
displayed when entering/exiting menus, of selecting colors, displays etc .. It
seems to be a mouse driver problem. Only the mouse installed on my PC is linked
a serial port (it isn't a bus version one ..), so the MS MOUSE.SYS belonging
to the Word 5.0 package won't recognize it.

Has another mouse driver been issued since ? If anyone as solved this problem,
please let me know. (there's no fun in a mouseless word ..)

Thank's
		-= David

PS-to-who-i-think: don't answer "WordPerfect is the answer", okay ? ;-)

You need the latest version of the Logitech mouse driver AND you need to
set the mouse to MM mode (Microsoft Mouse). You cannot use the mouse
driver that comes with Word, as it will only talk with Microsoft mice
on the bus or serial port.

I don't what version Logitech mouse driver you have, but try it. By
calling it up, it will automatically set the rodent to mm mode. Be sure
and get rid of the Microsoft driver, by rebooting the system.

It may be possible that mouse dirver you have needs to be replaced with
a new driver from Logitech. If the above doesn't work, give them a call.

This is actually a problem with MSWord 5.0, in my opinion. The changed
something in the program that requires changes to all mouse drivers. If
you use the MicroSoft mouse, then you get an upgraded mouse driver included
with MSWord. Otherwise you have to contact the manufacturer of your mouse
and get a new driver. We are still waiting for ones for our Logitech and
Mouse Systems mice. We just got one for our HP mice. (An article in
InfoWorld about a month ago had an acknowledgement from MicroSoft that the
new MSWord 5.0 would not work with most mice until the new drivers were
available, and even would not work with a number of EGA and VGA drivers.)

I've been experiencing the same problem with Word 5.0 (garbage
on the screen while in VGA graphics mode) using a Zenith VGA-549 and
the serial Logitech mouse. I am using the driver sent to me by Zenith
made especially for this configuration, and would be interested in a
  solution.

I received a fixed version of the Logitech Mouse Driver, version
4.T1, from Logitech this morning. It appears to work fine with
MS-Word V5.0.

I got it by phoning Logitech Tech Support. In the UK their
phone number is 0925 56506 (don't believe the number in their manual,
it took me 2 hours and a couple of international phone calls to
track them down, having tried their three previous numbers!).
