[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] cheap-lan

dbell@cup.portal.com (David J Bell) (09/17/89)

I've been looking for a cheap and simple networking system
for several PC's, with possible inclusion of Atari ST(s).

I'd be happy without full network features like being able to
mount another machine's disk or sub-directory as a disk or
directory on mine; simple file transfers like ftp would suffice.
The server software should run in the background under DOS on
all machines in the net, and I'd like to see a "flat" architecture -
no one particular system should be a central server, but all
should have equal access (unless protection schemes prevent) to
all other machines' files...

Speed? Flat-out serial of 56k to 115k baud as a minimum. This would
suffice for "most" file transfers. 1, 2, 5 or even 10Mbit/S would be
great, but I'd also to avoid buying an Ethernet-like interface for
each machine.

Source code availability would be a major feature, as I would like
to make the network available to non-IBM machines by porting the
server code...

If there is no inexpensive or p.d. product around like this, is
anyone interested in a collaborative project to (re)invent this
particular wheel?
