[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Scanres7 and Simtel20

hv@chyde.uwasa.fi (Harri Valkama LAKE) (09/26/89)

Keith Petersen announced that in Simtel20 they have available a file
called SCANRES7.ARC which I thought that were to contain a version
of 0.8v37 of SCANRES (resident version of VIRUSCAN). I downloaded
it but in that file were SCANRES of version 0.8v35. Why is that ?

Is there a conflict somewhere or have I made too far going
assumptions about version numbering?

Unfortunately, John McAfee (who distributes scanres and many other
anti-viral programs) seems to have troubles with version numbers.
Once a program of his has reached about the fourth public release,
you can be certain that somewhere amongst the archive name, program
name, program ID string, and documentation there is bound to be a
conflict. The ID strings for scanvirus and the documentation have
been "out of whack" for quite a while. I can assure you that what
I sent to SIMTEL20 is exactly the same as John posted on his BBS.
(But it's good that you're on your toes!)
