[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] v05i016: sfs002 space flight simulator program extract problem

rjd@pdntg1.paradyne.com (Ronald J. Dean) (10/13/89)

I have downloaded the sfs002.zoo file to my PC, and tried to extract it using
the zoo archiver. However, I get a fatal error in the earth.fd file, and
zoo bumps me out. I have tried to use the "fiz" utility to determine any
problems with the file, but havn't seemed to discover anything. Has anyone else
had problems extracting this file?

Thanks in advance for any help provided,

For some reason or another, I can't un-ZOO the space flight simulator program
recently posted on comp.binaries.ibm.pc. It dies on the executable, which is
the last file in the archive. Something about "Premature file header EOF"

This problem has occurred before and I've always wondered, "Gee, wouldn't
it be nice if the executable file were loaded first." Most times, when
there is a problem with un-ZOOing files, it usually ends up being the last
file in the archive. So I end up with perfect documentation, but no
program to run. Besides, text files can take a little corruption, but
program files can not.

So, I suggest putting the actual program first, and all of the documentation
and data files last. That way, if there is some problem with the archive,
you have a good chance of getting the actual program intact.

Just a thought. BTW, is there any other way to get the Space Flight
Simulator, say by anonymous FTP or something?

Space Flight Simulator is available via anonymous FTP from SIMTEL20.
It's in pd1:<msdos.education>sfs0002.arc

If you have never accessed SIMTEL20 be sure to read the appropriate help
files in the default anonymous FTP directory.

I had this problem also, but I rebuilt it and it worked fine.

How about telling us how to do that if we're accessing SIMTEL20 by a
uucp file-server? I don't understand the syntax of the above filespec,
though I've been using it, so I can't really guess what to look for.

pd1: is the disk drive name, <msdos.education> is the name of the
subdirectory (similar to Unix or MSDOS /msdos/education), sfs0002.arc
is of course the filename.
