At last the answers to the Beyond the Fringe questions...
1) (easy) Who did the music for Dudley Moore's piano playing in the film "10"?
None other than Dudley Moore! He has a music degree from Oxford (I
believe) and is an accomplished jazz pianist - in fact one of the
BTF sketches was basically him doing funny musical things at the
piano.
2) (hard) Who were Cook and Moore's characters in "Those... Jaunty Jalopies"?
Cook played a British officer, Colonel Dawmish (I believe that was
his rank), and Moore was his batman, Kit.
3) (????) For Alan Bennett fans, what does 'NORWICH' mean?
pyuxjj!rlr correctly identified this one: (k)nickers off ready when
I come home. I can't for the life of me recall the other acronym,
rlr. Post it - please?
4) Who wrote The Bed-Sitting Room? Who directed it?
It was written by the Great British Zany of the 20th century, Spike
Milligan (it was originally a stage play). The director was none other
than Richard Lester.
5) What now-famous playwright got his start taking a university
production of his first play to the Fringe festival? What was the play?
Tom Stoppard took "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" to the Fringe
Festival, and the rest is history...
6) For BTF fans, why didn't Peter Cook become a judge?
I didn't realize how many correct answers there actually are to this,
but Cook gave more than one reason. fortune!grw said that he couldn't
pass the test for the judging. rlr said that he couldn't because
he might accidentally sentence someone to "HUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!", and
under British law it would have to stand. Me, I thought it was because
he didn't have the Latin for the judging...
7) Why is life like a tin of sardines?
"We are all of us looking for the key." From Alan Bennett's sermon.
8) What is the Footlights Club?
The extracurricular activity at Cambridge University whose purpose
is to put on a comedy revue. This is where (among others) Michael
Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and I think Cook, Moore, Bennett and
Miller got their start. Graham Chapman and John Cleese are Oxford
boys, I believe.
