[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Can Anyone Email Me ...

ash@mlacus.oz (Ash Nallawalla) (01/02/90)

Often people have said "I missed Jethack part 44 of 501 ... can anyone email me a copy" (or similar). Do they get millions of copies of the same file, thus
clogging up the lines? It would be safer to ask for offers from people willing to email a copy, and then choose just one.

I too have been disappointed by the lack of binaries here (I only collect
utilities), and being a newcomer to this scene I ask why there is only one person who can post binaries here? Why not (think of a number within reason)?

I have still not understood how to use ftp, so I have timidly obtained a few
files from SIMTEL20 using a server at NoDak.edu. It is quite easy, and I would recommend this method to those who can't ftp, as many of those "Can anyone
please email me..." requests could be solved by simply asking simtel to mail a
copy in a uuencoded format. (Keith and others have regularly posted details of
how this is done).

I applaud the service offered by Keith Petersen and others on this newsgroup in making it easy for us to obtain programs, but I feel that if you are keen
enough, you should join your local ibm-pc user group. In the US many groups charge about $20-30 per annum; maintain a BBS where you can obtain some programsmuch sooner than they appear on simtel or similar sites; and some clubs let you
copy shareware or PD software for free or approx $2-5 per disk. Sure, that's a lot more effort than just sitting at your office terminal and asking others to email you a copy...
