[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Review of WHERE34.ZIP and other file finders

ts@uwasa.fi (Timo Salmi LASK) (01/11/90)

One often faces the problem of finding a particular file on
harddisk. There are several PD utilities for this task. I recently
obtained (pc/pd2/)where34.zip for anonymous ftp from chyde.uwasa.fi
at Vaasa, Finland. The where34.zip package by Keith Ledbetter
contains a very useful and mature wildcard file finding utility
where.exe. One of its nice features is that it can search though
files packed with any of the common packing methods such as .arc,
.lzh, .pak, .zip, and .zoo files. Another of its many features is
the possibility of extending the search to several drives at one go.

There are also other file finders available from chyde.uwasa.fi.
The oldest is sfind.exe by Tony Overfield included in the
(pc/pd/)xanadu.zip utilities collection. It searches though a disk
and its .arc files for a wildcard filename.

Pkware has released two file finders which are in pkfind11.arc and
pkzf10.zip packages. The former includes the possibility of
searching though .arc files, and the latter through .zip files.

File name search by a search string can also be made with ordinary
MsDos commands. The locate.bat and where.bat batches in
(pc/ts/)tsbat12.arc show how to do this.
