[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Want program to download in background

kimf@tybalt.caltech.edu (Kim Flowers) (01/15/90)

I vaguelly remember a program floating around somewhere that allowed
downloading from a mainframe to a PC in the background. I need to
transfer some extremely large files from a VMS system to a PC and
would prefer to be able to use the PC while I'm at it.

Does this description tickle any memories?

DGTERM in PD2:<MSDOS2.MODEM> on Simtel20 supports background
download/upload with XMODEM or YMODEM-BATCH... Crashes the system
every once in a while though, if I remember correctly. Evidently the
comm program that comes with PC-TOOLS (Centralpoint) supports
background XMODEM too.

This is a risky business. There are several versions
around. But I did not see a useful one. Multitasking in Dos
environment is not always easy. Finally you will find you
don't save any time after transfer fail from time to time.

Try RCOMM from Simtel20 in pd1:<msdos.modem>. It's a bit flaky, but
does reasonable background download in Xmodem and Ymodem.
