[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Simtel20 Redial-Type Login Program Needed

jharper@carina.unm.edu (Jeff) (02/15/90)

Unfortunately the only time I have to access Simtel20 is during weekdays
when many people are using it. Quite commonly I have to spend many
minutes repeatedly trying to anonymous ftp login. After a while, I usually
get in or give up.

I would like to have a utility which can perform this tedious task explained
above and then allow the user to complete the ftp session similiar to the
way a redial feature works on a telephone by getting past the busy signal and
allowing one to complete the phone call. Does such a program exists (C,
shellscript, etc.) which will keep tying Simtel20 for a short period of time
(5-7 minutes) and then quit if it doesn't get in? Any help would be
apreciated. Thanks in advance.

[Asks for a program/script to access simtel20 which would try for several
minutes to get through and, if successful, allow the user to perform file
transfers as usual.]

I know there has been discussion here about something called "autoftp"
which MAY do this (I haven't seen the program). I have written a script
for TELIX which can do this and several other things. However, I never
finished it, since I no longer have access to ftp. If I see sufficient
interest, I will complete and distribute it. As for Unix scripts, I see a
fairly easy way to do it in ``ksh'' using the two-way pipe. However, I'm
sure ``sh'' scripts would be far more acceptable.

You might want to look at autoftp30. It may give you some ideas on how to
make your own utility or you may be able to modify it to do what you want.
It is available from simtel20.
