[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] pax2 tar cpio gamma test exe's available

walters@oksce1.okstate.edu (Harold G. Walters) (02/23/90)

****
There has been a lot of work done on pax in general and the MSDOS port in
particular since the version that was recently posted in comp.binaries.ibm.pc.
As far as I can tell this new version has no bugs :-)
From the README.1ST file...
****

This is an announcement for the gamma test version of the MSDOS
version of PAX version 2. See the README file and the man pages for
more information on how to run PAX, TAR, and CPIO.

For those of you who don't know, pax is a 3 in 1 program that gives the
functionality of pax, tar, and cpio. It supports both the DOS
filesystem and the raw "tape on a disk" system used by most micro UN*X
systems. This will allow for easy transfer of files to and from UN*X
systems. It also support multiple volumes. Floppy density for
raw UN*X type read/writes can now be specified on the command line.

The executable file, man pages, and README files have been placed in
pax2exegamma.arc on vms.ucc.okstate.edu (192.31.83.2) and
wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4) in ~/pub/pax2exegamma.arc. Sources
will eventually be posted to one of the source groups. The final DOS
version will eventually be posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc.

***** the changes since the beta version ****************************
Pax now supports UN*X shell style regular expression expansion on the
command line. Trailing slashes on directories are now stored in tar
archive files for better compatibility with BSD tar (other tars don't
care) The default blocking factor with pax-as-tar has been changed to 20.
An environment variable PAXNAM which can be set to the program name
for DOS 2.x (ie. set PAXNAM tar).
*********************************************************************

The gamma test version has been tested on PCDOS 3.1 and MSDOS 3.3 on
low and high density 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppies. If you test it on
other hardware or versions of DOS drop me some e-mail. If you have
other problems drop me some e-mail as well.

Be sure to use a blocking factor of 20 with pax-as-tar and B with
pax-as-cpio for best performace.
