[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] repost: My arch don't arch

v060qhfb@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu (02/27/90)

Ok. I told you I was new at this:

The archiver is simtel20 at net address 26.2.0.74 via FTP.

I accessed the archiver. issued the commands binary, quote "type l 8"
, get (what have you). and then I kermit the file to my home system.

I got the arce40c archiver from the arce40c. bas boot strap.
It created the .com and .doc file ok. But when i tried to de-arch.
the file selectn.arc I got a error message that says it could not create.
I checked the error message doc. and it said thta either the file ws corrupted
or my memory was to small. (I'm using a 64k base with 256K Extended Memory).
So then i thought maybe it was the disk , So I transfered them to a speerate
disk. Got the same thx#o\ Then I said maybe it was the Arched file so I got
another one ,Same thing. then I switched binary to ascii , got the same thing.
then I went to tenex and still got the same thing. SO either it's the arce40c
archiver or 756K total memeory is to small,( which I doubt).
	Help!!!!!!!
If anyone uses the simtel20 archiver (net: 26.2.0.74) and has an
archiver that has worked. let me know) (If your local maybe we could just
connect our Pc. and bypass the vax translation (I have a procomm disk with a
nice prortcal selection.)

VMS is a pain in the behind. I've spent hours and hours answering
messages from frustrated VMS users who cannot get good binary transfers
via FTP.

The most likely problem is the modem program you are using to transfer
the files to your PC. Mainframe Kermits default to TEXT mode, which
really messes up binary files. You must tell the mainframe Kermit
SET FILE TYPE BINARY when you transfer binary files.

Many VMS ftp programs do not do TENEX mode correctly. To get around
this you must issue two commands:

BINARY
QUOTE "TYPE L 8"

The double quotes are required. Be sure not to do a DIR inbetween
issuing these commands and when you get the file. The DIR command
causes the mode set by the QUOTE command to be lost.

ARCE40C can handle any ARC file we have on SIMTEL20.
PKPAK/PKUNPAK 3.61 also works on any of our ARCs.
