[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Screen blankers that do neat things

jdudeck@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (John R. Dudeck) (03/01/90)

My query a few weeks ago about screen blankers for the PC resulted in a
rather limited response. Several mentioned PD1:<MSDOS.EGA>EGAFIRE.ARC
on SIMTEL20, which gives a nice fireworks display, but is not a timed
screen blanker. One netter sent me a uuencoded fireworks display that
runs in CGA mode, and is also not a timed blanker.

The best screen blanker I found is called PD1:<MSDOS.MSWINDOWS>FIRE42.ARC,
which works well, but only works while Windows is running. Sometimes
I go into windows just to have the screen blanker. It gives a
fireworks display.

There is also EXPLOSIV.ZIP and another version called EXPLOS12.ZIP which
I believe I found on MTSG.UCB.CA. This is supposed to be a timed blanker,
and it gave a sort of starburst display, a little different from the
fireworks displays. But it seemed rather flaky to me. The commands
to enable and disable it did not seem to work consistently. It would
blank the screen and immediately redraw it sometimes, and at other times
it would go into the starburst display. I don't care to waste time
on flaky software, so I have not put it to use.

If anyone knows of any other PC screen blankers that make moving displays,
be sure to let the world know about them! Just an occasional twinge
of macEnvy...gack! :^@

Sorry, but *my* timed screen blanker lets whatever you're running continue ...

Fireworks are nice, but they don't get any work done.
