In the recent answers to the soft drink quiz, many people postulated that WACO was the only or one of the only stations west of the Mississippi with call letters that started with a W rather than a K. In general this is true, but another exception I can recall is WFAA radio/tv in Dallas. I believe that if a station was licensed early enough (like in the 30's), there weren't enough stations yet that they needed W's and K's , so call letters with W's were assigned. WFAA has been on the air a very long time. I can check the Broadcasting Yearbook for anyone who's really interested in this bit of trivia. -deborah gronke bennett fortune!dsd!avsds!avsdt:deborah

Stations west of Missisippi with W--- call letters: (these are all Iowa, where I used to live, watched all of them too): WOC (Davenport) and WHO (Des Moines) --owned by Palmer Broadcasting, so you get to see coverage of graduation at a certain chiropractic school. WOI (Iowa State Univ, Ames), and I believe first FM radio and first TV in Iowa.
