There is a station in Philadelphia whose call letters escape me at the moment but I know they begin with a K, another violation of the rule.

The station in Philly (both radio and TV) is KYW (1060 AM, Ch. 3). Does anyone know why stations are allowed to "buck the system" jeff ...[seismo,brl-bmd,mcnc,we13]!rlgvax!jsg

Alright, if you're going to go on about non-standard call letters, how about KDKA AM, and TV, in Pittsburgh. KDKA has its non-standard call ID because it was the FIRST commercial AM station. <Please note, the first commercial station. I think Grove City College had the first, or one of the first, regularly scheduled AM stations quite awhile before them??> For trivia lovers, where did KYW-TV used to be? <This is NOT a trick question, alas.> There are quite a few non-standard callsigns, most of them coming about by virtrue of age or special circumstances. I don't have a list, but anyone with a copy of White's Radio Log could find a few.

I believe you are trying to think of KDKA , which happens to be in Pittsburgh. It is the only radio station EAST of the Mississippi with a K call. These rules, by the by, apply to commercial radio and Tv. Amateur radio operators have W and K calls in all parts of the country. KDKA kept their K call for historical reasons. -larry

As has already been mentioned, KDKA is NOT the only radio station east of the Mississippi that starts with a K. At least one other such station does exist and that is KYW in Philadelphia. KDKA starts with a K because it got its license before the W/K rule was followed. KYW starts with a K because it was an existing station in Philadelphia (with call letters starting with a W) that was taken over by a group that owned a station out west. When they moved to Philadelphia, they brought their license with them, call letters and all. If any other exceptions exist (as I know they do), the reason is probably one of the two mentioned here. KDKA is not the ONLY radio station east of the Mississippi to have call letters start with a K; try KFIZ in Fond du Lac WI. There. Now nobody can claim they are the only K east of the Mississippi or the only W west of the Mississippi. So before everybody and his brother writes to tell us about their favorite home station from East Boondocks, USA which doesn't conform because Jimmy the Groundhog once correctly predicted six more weeks of elections, let's stop. As someone pointed out, for those truly bored there is a book listing radio stations in the US. Rick Lindsley
