[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Looking for Disk defragmentizer for DOS 4.0

"Arnold G. Gill" <GILLA@QUCDN.QueensU.CA> (04/07/90)

How about trying PCTools, any version. They have a very good compress
program (a defragmenter, not the unix-style compress) that comes with the
package.

Hi there,

try The Norton Utilities Advanced Edition 4.50 or PC Tools 6.0.
Both packages are comercial and both have a Disk Optimizer and
an Unerase program included. These packages contain some other
nifty utilities as well.

Greetings Kai

How about DOG.EXE. It's shareware, and available on just about every FTP site.
It's fast, and safe. (Better diags than CHKDSK). I've had it on my HD's
autoexec, and it never gave me a problem.

I personally would NOT recommend using PCTOOLS' defragger on DOS >= 4.0
with > 32mb partitions.

I have seen 2 disks lose their first FAT after a defrag. Fortunately we
were able to write a program to copy the 2nd FAT into the first to
recover the disks.

Hmmm...following up on my own post.

What I would recommend is Norton's Utilities defragger. I have never seen
it fail on any type of media, controller, partition size, or DOS version.
It is rather slow though.

I also have had problems using PCTools' defragger (and one of the backup disks
for my hd was bad, 2 sets of backups from now on!) using >32mb partitions.
I would strongly recommend using =<32mb partitions.
