There are a number of software packages that allow one to operate a PC remotely from another PC. I would like to be able to run a PC in a vt100 window of a Unix machine (NeXT), preferably through an ethernet card, but otherwise through a serial port. This doesn't seem too complicated for a character based program, but I haven't heard of any solutions. steve frank

Last I knew, PC-Anywhere could be used by a "dumb terminal" as well as a terminal emulator program (they provide one, but you could use your own). Other products (Carbon Copy, for example), require proprietary code at both ends, so that product wouldn't work. Lan versions of some products can use ethernet , but I don't know if they can be accessed from a Unix-type system. PC Magazine posted the code several months ago (January, I think) for a simple character-based serial program - both ends. If you're 8088-assembler-literate, you might be able to hack it up a tad or figure how to write your own unix-end driver. As far as working via ethernet, perhaps if your PC ethernet driver has an int-14 interceptor - and if the remote-emulation program will use it, rather than replace it with their own driver - it might work. Anywhere is a remote access programs along the lines of programs like Carbon Copy and Crosstalk's Remote. However, it has the advantage of supporting access from dumb terminals, including the vt100. I can't say I liked everything about Anywhere (lousy docs, wierd configuration scheme), but it got the job done. It's commercial software, and I think it would set you back around $100. +------------------------------------------------------------------+ / mead!todd@uccba.uc.edu ...!uccba!mead!todd 71600,343 \ +-----------------------------------------------+----------------------+ | _____ | Mead Data Central | | | _ _| _| | _ _ ,_ _ ,_ _| | 9473 Springboro Pike | | | |_| |_| |_| |_ |_' |_| | | |_\ | |_| | Miamisburg, OH 45342 | | | (513) 865-1367 | +-----------------------------------------------+----------------------+
