Does anyone have experience with the various ports of emacs to DOS? Which
is the best? Thanks.

I'd prefer Freemacs (?), a GNU port.

Freemacs is not a GNU port. There is no GNU emacs that will run on
PC's. There is, however, MG which is about the same as GNU emacs, but
was based on something else.

You may want to check out MicroEMACS? Its available via FTP from
Simtel20. Ive used various versions over the years and found it to be
a very good editor. The current author has added new features such as
MicroSpell for spell checking. The latest version out I know of is
3.10 but I only have 3.9j (or i or some letter).
