I just downloaded a copy of 4DOS version 3.01 from the SIMTEL archives (actually from the Wash U. copies of them). If anyone reading this newsgroup has used 4DOS or has knowledge of it, please E-mail your comments to me. They would like $50 to register it which seems a little steep BUT it seems (I just got it yesterday) like an VERY good piece of software. Are these first impressions of mine correct? What are some other user's opinions of this software? Thanks very much in advance. -- Kevin Routh (routh@eltanin.rtp.semi.harris.com) Harris Smart Power Products, Durham, NC (919) 361-1622

Oh yes, it is most certainly worth it! I've been using it for a few months
now, and I feel crippled when I have to go back to Command.com (but then,
dont we all? 8) Anyway, it does what it says, and reliably. The program
is a little bigger than COMMAND.COM, but with EMS/XMS/Disk swapping, it
actually *saves* you memory! I've been using it on simulated EMS, and it
has never failed me. The command line history is a winner too, as is
the Alias feature. In short, the only things I can find to say about
it are positive ones. I think you'll be well pleased!

4DOS - a bargain at the price! Command editing is a big win, memory usage is a big win, command set is a big win. I love it (but I'm not going to marry it). jim =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "The opinions expressed here in no way represent the views of Digital Equipment Corporation." I have been using 4DOS for a couple of months and like it very much. Here is a blurb I sent a while back to DOS users on our local network: Some of you might like to take a look at the 4DOS command interpreter shell (complete replacement for DOS's COMMAND.COM) available for DOS machines. I tried it this weekend and was quite impressed. Features of 4DOS include: * Filename completion built-in * Command history (recall) * Nice alias facility * Directory stack (pushdir, popdir, and dirs) * Better wildcards than DOS With all these features, I was able to discard most of my TSR's (FILEC, CED, PUSHDIR) and in the process I wound up with 15K more RAM than before. The only drawback (for DOS 3.3 users) I have found in 4DOS is the lack of the APPEND command allowing search by applications for data and overlay files. This is not a big deal however since you can get around it by shelling to DOS whenever needed, i.e.: APPEND => C:\COMMAND.COM /C APPEND I found this to work fast and efficiently in several batch files in which I require the APPEND command. Since TSR conflicts are frequently a source of annoyance in some DOS applications, I am happy with the need for fewer. And I like the 15K more RAM that 4DOS leaves me. Try it, you might like it. 4DOS is available from Simtel PD1:<MSDOS.SYSUTL> 4DOS30.ZIP. Or I could bring it in on a disk. -bd- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bob Davis \\\ INTERNET : sonny@trantor.harris-atd.com Harris Corporation, ESS \\\ UUCP : ...!uunet!x102a!trantor!sonny Advanced Technology Department \\\ AETHER : K4VNO PO Box 37, MS 3A/1912 \\\ VOICE : (407) 727-5886 Melbourne, FL 32902 \\\ FAX : (407) 729-2537

A real nice feature that I've found for us UNIX-DOS cross-programmers (Donahue will feature us soon -) is how easy it is to set up aliases for misc UNIX commands, plus you can use either '/' or '\' as dir delimiters. BTW - PC Mag had a write up on it a month or so ago.
