If you are unable to access SIMTEL20 via Internet FTP or through one
of the BITNET/EARN file servers, most SIMTEL20 MSDOS files, including
the entire PC-Blue collection, are available for downloading on the
Detroit Download Central network at 313-885-3956. DDC has multiple
lines which support 300, 1200, 2400, and 9600 bps (HST). This is a
subscription system with an average hourly cost of 17 cents. It is
also accessable on Telenet via PC Pursuit and on Tymnet via StarLink
outdial. New files uploaded to SIMTEL20 are usually available on DDC
within 24 hours.

Keith, would it be possible to make SIMIBM.IDX available in a compressed
format? I usually order the SIMIBM.ARC, just to reduce the load on the
mailserver. Having SIMIBM.IDX in an arc would be very handy

Keith doesn't call here anymore. Perhaps his name ought to be
changed to Simtel20 archivist.

Well, I would be surprised if Keith worked in Sacramento :-). But who,
then, posted the recent long list of uploads summary for June, using
Keith's .sig?????

Keith, are you still out there?

I agree with you 100%, and I expect that a lot of people would like
SIMIBM.IDX in a compressed form. I hope that someday it is possible.

Perhaps you might like instead to download SIMIBM.ARC, which is 200K
lighter, and includes SIMIBM.IDX as one of the component files. I have
often wondered why one would download SIMIBM.IDX rather than SIMIBM.ARC.
I have always found that SIMIBM.ARC is THE most important
single file to download for guiding one's access to the massive
SIMTEL DOS collection.

It has ALWAYS been possible. SIMIBM.IDX is inside SIMIBM.ARC. Before
someone says "I don't need all the other files in that ARC", if we
deleted them all it would only save 30K in the size of the ARC. There
are many people who need those information files and programs to print
the index. They would complain is the files were NOT included. It's
not worth getting upset about it for only 30K.

As I emphasized above, I do exactly that! However, there are 2 reasons
for preferring to download SIMIBM.IDX in compressed form:

1) SIMIBM.IDX will compress to less than SIMIBM.ARC, as shown here:
SIMIDX ARC 212550 7-05-90 4:05a

2) I already have all those extra programs!

A point to which I must agree... but I still don't need to move a new
copy every time I update my index. Compressing SIMIBM.IDX would save me
about 65k of uuencoded mail space, thus lightening the demand on the
net. (actually, I use SIMTEL35 to manage my index, so I really don't
need those extra programs at all)

I'm sure that SIMTEL generates SIMIBM.IDX by some automated means, and
updates SIMIBM.ARC in a similar manner. I'd bet that SIMIDX.ARC would be
a line or two added to the shell script.

I'm certainly not upset, Keith... but in the interest of conserving net
bandwidth, I'd like to be able to save that 30k. (it's closer to 45k
when you figure in the expansion of uuencoding) I also never suggested
deleting the additional support files from SIMIBM.ARC, but instead,
making SIMIBM.IDX available _seperately_ in a compressed form.

You know the SIMTEL user better than I, though. If it would cause too
much hassle, I can always carry on as I have thus far: pulling
SIMIBM.ARC down and discarding the other files.

I agree with this request. For I too grab the composite ARC file because
it is smaller. I would also prefer to grab just the index file in an ARCed
format. Perhaps you could simply call it : "SIMIDX.ARC" as it will be in the
IBM area anyway. So there should not be any confusion :-).

Concerning band width, how about this - making available on a regular basis,
say each month, a file of differences between the new simibm.idx and the previous simibm.idx. simibm.arc already has a simdif program. Add a merge program,
that given a simibm.idx and the output files of simdif, could build a new
simibm.idx.

This would save considerable bandwith since each month's changes are but a
small fraction of the total index.

David, I think that's an excellent idea! (wish I'd thought of it)
Even a Unix diff file would help, I think. I'm sure I have some kind of
program around to merge it.

Larry Wall's "patch" program has been ported to MS-DOS:
	PD1:<MSDOS.FILUTL>PATCH11.ARC

Thanks, Raymond!

I'll get hold of it right away. (in anticipation of SIMIDX.DIF :-)

 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
If a context diff was provided the 'patch' program could be used to update
a local list. This would catch deletions as well as additions.

SIMTEL. Last we all heard, Uncle Sam was going to pull the plug, and now
Keith shows up with a mail header of Detroit Download Central.
Inquiring minds want to know..Does SIMTEL live, or is this its alter ego
operating out of Detroit?

SIMTEL was never in doubt, Keith's job went away.
