1. When Williams hit over .400 in `41, he lost the MVP title to Joe Dimaggio, who had his 56 game hitting streak that year. 2. Roger "Asterisk" Maris hit 59 homers through 154 games. He hit #59 in game 154 in Baltimore, and also had a couple long fly outs. He wanted to at least tie Ruth in 154 games. 3. Trick question. There was no 1904 World Series. The NY Giants refused to play that year (1903 was the first series) You could technically say that the AL champs, Boston, were the winners. 4. On Sept. 9, 1965, Cub pitcher Bob Hendley gave up only 1 hit. However, that game the Dodger pitcher didn`t allow a base runner all night. That was Sandy Koufax. Incidentally, the hit, a double by Lou Johnson, didn`t figure in the scoring (LA won 1-0). They scored on a walk(to Johnson), SB, error on the Cub catcher, and a sacrifice fly. BONUS: Pat Jarvis gave up Ernie Banks` 500th homer. Unfortunately, the file that had most of the responses got accidently written over, so I can`t tell you who the 2 people were who gott all the questions right (nice going Tom). I can acknowledge Laura Noff for her excellent retelling of the Koufax perfecto, from memory no less. Thanks for playing along. I`ll be more careful on my next quiz.
