[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Unix compatable make for MSDOS

routh@eltanin.rtp.semi.harris.com (Kevin Routh x622) (08/18/90)

I am looking for a Unix compatable "make" utility for MSDOS. I downloaded
several from SIMTEL, which of them is the best? They are

MAKE.C
MAEK.C
MAKE-PD.ARC

I tried the make-pd one and it seems to have a few problems. Are these
three all there are? Please help me find a good Unix "make" for MSDOS.

There is now a port to DOS of GNU make, made by Thorsten Ohl, in
Germany, very well adapted for MS-DOS limitations: reponse files for
LIB and LINK, auto-swap out of the way, and other good ideas.
Thorsten also adapted several of the other GNU tools, among which file
utilities. I got the feeling, as a user, that the ports are of high
quality.

I am trying to find a way to make Thorsten's work available in this
continent. A few people suggested me to contact Bill Davidsen and ask
him to *post* binaries to Usenet, but none gave me his email address
(I do not have experience in posting to moderated newsgroups, and it
could well be that all these binaries require some moderation :-). It
would also be nice to have some well known archive sites or servers as
repositories for binaries and diffs (sources are in fact diffs to prep
official releases), both ftp and uucp based. Would some willing ftp
site wizards contact me, preferably well known and available sites? I
cannot really reply myself to all and every of the many requests I
have for these tools.

The idea is to set up a careful, congruent setup on MS-DOS for GNU
tools, available in binary form. Thorsten call this his `GNUish
MS-DOS' project! I let you know, in this group, of any actions taken
as a consequence of this message/request.
