[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] PostScript Interpreter for HP Printers

fishnet@hubcap.clemson.edu (brian thomas kassa) (09/16/90)

Does anyone know of a PostScript Interpreter that will work with Hewlett
Packard Printers. If so where can I get It.

						Thanks,

I know I am going to get flamed for this, but I will say it anyway:
			don't bother.

Here is why. With the newer LJ printers, you can purchase a PostScript cart-
ridge. With the older versions of the LJ, you are limited to the number of
fonts that are available, to either what comes standard or the plugged in
cartridge. Other models of the LJ allow downloading of fonts.

If you have the non-downloadable LJ, then the PostScript conversion program
may not be able to handle all of the requested font sizes or even the font
itself. The Star Trek: The Next Generation Guide that I put out in PostScript
is in New Century Schoolbook and Helvetica, a combination that I haven't seen
in a cartridge. I do release a Times-Roman and Helvetica version and I think
that that cartridge exists, but I don't think all of the font sizes exist.

If you have a LJ that supports downloadable fonts, then you may be able to
get closer to the original document, if a) the conversion program has access
to all of the necessary fonts types and families and can download them when
needed and b) it converts any graphics to LJ bitmap.

I have a LJ user of my guide, but he uses the troff source. He still has some
font size limitations, which I have provided for in the guide. And he has a
tool to convert the graphic logos that I have to bit-map for the printer.

So, unless you have the downloadable version of the LJ, I suggest that you
a) either forget it or b) spend some money on a cheap PostScript printer.

All of this is personal opinion and subject to updates from technological
changes.
