[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] MINIX on cbip?

davidsen@crdos1.crd.ge.COM (Wm E Davidsen Jr) (09/10/90)

Andy has suggest that I post the demo version of MINIX to c.b.i.p.
Before I do that I would like to know how many people would find that
useful. Format would be as usual a zoo archive, with a doc, disk image,
and kickstart programs. The kickstart (I have to write it) would copy
the disk image to the disk, which would be booted.

Of course, if someone has a program to do this, I won't insist on
writing it...

I have been considering MINIX and would appreciate a chance to check it out
and see what it can do.

Thanks,
George

I, for one, would like to see it! I've been reluctant to purchase Minix,
as my hardware is kind of non-standard. A demo version would show me
whether I could actually use it.

Would someone first post a description of what exactly a MINIX demo consists
 of, it's limitations, etc..

Yes, please. And what might be the chance that your kickstart and/or
the demo version might help someone bootstrap up the "full" version?
I have a friend who bought the full version but never installed it,
partly because it comes on 1.2mb floppies, which the system he'd like
to install it on doesn't have (just 360k and 1.44mb). We have access
to systems that we could use to copy "standard" dos disks from 1.2
to 1.44, but that won't help much because the Minix distribution
disks aren't "standard" format.

I haven't spent a lot of time looking into this, so I may not have all
of the details right. (It's his copy, not mine, though I might also
be interested in buying a copy if I like the looks of his). I'm also
not entirely sure whether having a demo version up would help anything
in this process or not, but it seems at least concievable.

Count my YES vote for some MINIX demo on cbip. A coworker at JPL
used it as part of a grad school project, and it looked very interesting.
I'd like to fiddle around with it without paying lots of $$$ first.

Same here,I'd like to see Minix in action.I guess I'd have to re-partition
part of my DOS hard drive for the demo to work?

How much is MINIX? What does one get? Does it run in 80386 mode?
What BIOS and harddiskcontrollers is NOT compatible with?
