[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Information on Optical Scanner needed!

xjzhu@violet.uwaterloo.ca (XiaoJun Zhu ) (09/26/90)

Hi, there:

I am looking for some package (Optical Scanner) which can scan characters and
pictures . I am expecting the package can recognize most of the standard
fonts used by the newspapers and magazines . And also it should alow users to
modify the content which you get by scanning.I am hoping somebody out there
can give me some tips on getting this kind of package, esp. the price and
function. ( I have a 386 running at 25mhz )

Thank you very much in advance.

    I have Logitech's ScanMan Plus, which is a 100 - 400 dpi scanner
that does 32 shades of grey. I picked it up from a local software
store and paid about $200 for it. It includes PaintShow+, a support
file for Windows, and an option to scan straight from dos (with no
editing). PaintShow+ is almost identical to MacPaint and it requires
a mouse or trakball to use.
Seperately, Logitech sells an intelligent OCR for another $200. I
don't have it. I just got the one off of Simtel 20 and it works fine.

Ive been using an HP ScanJet with the SPOT OCR package for about 2 years now.
I recently got the 3.0 package and love it. Ive used it to read in magazines,
printouts (laser and dot matrix), news papers (but not recommened), and all
kinds of other stuff. It is of the trainable variety and flexible enough to
recognize triplets. The company that makes SPOT is Flagstaff Engineering in
Flagstaff AZ. I dont have their address or # handy but you can get it from
most any PC magazine (general ones, not specific ones) or from directory
services. I have no affiliation w/Flagstaff or HP apart from being a
very happy
customer (the tech support folks are really helpful when needed).
