[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] BACKUP PROGRAMS WITH COMPRESSION

fireman@sunc7.cs.uiuc.edu (10/09/90)

LOOKING FOR: PD BACKUP PROGRAM WITH COMPRESSION

Are there any public domain backup programs which compress the data? I've
been unable to find any in the pcsig collection.

If no such backup program exists, can someone tell me which backup programs
are the best. I'm currently using one that doesn't keep track of which
disk number to insert next. Leads to a bit of uncertainty.

Finally, one last issue with regards to backup programs. Why do they always
start an incremental backup on a new disk? Why can't they use the remaining
space on the previous disk first?

Thanks in advance,

I like PCTOOLS vers 6.0. It is fast, allows a choice of compression schemes,
and allows incremental backups to continue on the last disk. There are
other backup programs around that will do the same thing but together with
the other things packaged in PCTOOLS, it is a great buy.

Try ZOOX, an extention of ZOO. It is available on SIMTEL. ALso get the ZOO
package. This will solve the second part of the problem - use stuff and pipe
to zoo to update an archive.

Zoox has a parameter that allows you to specify the maximum size of an archive
and prompts (for a new disk) when it reaches that size. Note that there is a
wierd bug in Zoox that prevents you from making an archive on a floppy above
about 1.2M. This is not serious to get round though.

The advantages:
You have a normal archive from which files can be extracted one by one, or
all at once, as needed. Recovery is normally only needed for one or two files
at a time.

If anything goes wrong on the floppies - a corrupt track for example - you
only loose one or two files at the most.

You use freshen to update current archives, and stuff to create new disks.
Use stuff and zoox to fill partly-filled disks for small updates.

I borrowed a copy of PCTOOLS, installed it on a RAM disk and tried it out.
I didn't like it at all. ANd I certainly didn't have enough room to put it
on my hard disk. Norton 3.0 and 4dos are a far better (from space/utility)
although I admit PCTOOLS does have a few things I like, but not to spend all
that and have the disk space used up.

PCTools is even nicer though. All I use from it is COMPRESS, MIRROR and
PCBACKUP/PCRESTORE (I can't stand PC-Shell and their Desktop is brain dead).
So, only those files exist on my hard drive, I nuked everything else in the
PCTools directory with a simple 4DOS command:
EXCEPT (COMPRESS.* MIRROR.* PCBACKUP.* PCRESTOR.*) DEL *.*

I don't know

I use PC-Tools (5.1 installed, 6.0 lying around waiting for installation).
The version 6.0 manauls says that you can use a previously used disk
for incremental backup, i.e. you can append incremental backups on floppies.

The version 5.1 backup was very fast on my system (12 Mhz 286). It took
less time to write data to the floppy than to format it.
There was a comparison of backup programs some time ago in a german
computer magazine and while PC-tools was not the best in all categories,
like speed and compression, it was just a few percents difference between
it and the better one (I can't remember which one). But the difference
in price was about a factor of 4 or 5 (in germany / switzerland), so I
bought PC-Tools 5.1 (for home usage) and upgraded to 6.0, lately.
The other backup tools were worse more than just a few percents from these
two leading products and costs more than PC-tools. In addition you will get
some other tools which I am almost not using. (With DOS and my system I
like to use the commandline interface - If I had a 386 or 486 I would use
UNIX and X, but that's a totally different topic).

I have written (but not posted) a program called ZOOBACK. It compresses into
a ZOO file which can span several floppies. It is based on Zoo, so is not
Public Domain. Rahul Dhesi holds the copyright for most of it, but I placed
the code which I wrote in the public domain (if I remember correctly). I've
been using it for all my backups for about two years now, with no problems.

If anyone is interested, send me mail. If enough are interested, I'll post.

I would buy PCTOOLS Version 6 just for the backup capability. It is fast and
versatile. The Desktop is a space waster both in disk space and memory. The
DOS shell (PCShell) is okay and I use it, but there are better tools around.
The Diskfix utility is also nice for compressing disks. There are also
utilities to recover files etc.

The PCBackup program is only about 200K disk space.
