[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Expanded Memory and Cache progs

pedro@quiche.cs.mcgill.ca (Sandro MAZZUCATO) (10/22/90)

Hello
can someone suggest me a good EMS driver that takes EXTended memory
and converts it into Expanded, without using too much memory.

Also is there a good cache program that works with RLL drives and with
extended or expanded memory !

Thank You in advance.

Dear Sandro:
Get PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.ARC from Simtel [26.2.0.74]. In it
there is a catalog that you can scan to find:

Searching Simtel's catalog by grepping for ache, one finds:

PD1:<MSDOS.DSKUTL>
--------------------
CACHEART.ARC B 17009 880829 Review of disk cache programs
CACHEMON.ZIP B 20895 900416 TSR disk cache monitor: count hits and misses

Looking over the list of disk cache programs. I thought PC KWIK was
and established commercial program, not shareware. Correct me if
I'm wrong.

Don't bother with EMSIM.ARC - it is a crippled evaluation copy from a
defunct supplier. It's just wasting space on SIMTEL20. Don't know about
MEMSIM32.ARC but why opt for LIM 3.2? EMS40V11.ARC is good - it's from
PC Magazine and is freeware. However, any such program is going to take
on the order of 70K from your 640K since the 64K page frame must exist in
the first megabyte. There are some commercial programs (e.g. Turbo EMS,
Above Disc) that do somewhat more than EMS40V11.ARC (e.g. can use disk as
well as extended to simulate expanded) but are you willing to surrender 70K?
Above discussion is for '286 machines - I don't know much about '386
machines. Don't they typically have embedded support for this?

Current versions of Super PC-KWIK are commercial,
but there were early shareware versions. The documentation
mentions the commercial (and more powerful) version.

Another product which has not been mentioned in this disscussion is HyperDisk.
The current version (4.11) of this shareware product supports extended,
expanded, and conventional memory. It has advanced features such as 286/386
support, background and staged write updaing. It works with Windows 3.0,QEMM, and Desqview. It is available on several BBS's and I can upload it to simtel20
if demand is sufficient. My informal testing indicates that it is the fastest
non-Commercial disk cache available.

Note: I am not affiliated with hyper-ware, just a satisfied customer.

You won't believe this, but back on 21/Oct/90 (was a Sun BTW) at
about 22:51, this guy Sandro MAZZUCATO said this to All:

If you are using a 386, I recommend QEMM 386 and PC-CACHE with
PCtools. If you are into multi-tasking, Desqview 386 combines DV
with QEMM.

Since everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, I'd recommend the Super
PC-Kwik disk cache from Multisoft, rather than PC-Tools. It has better
performance in tests that I ran, and has been rated highly by PC Magazine
and other publications. It supports expanded, extended and conventional
memory.
