There are numerous, excellent shareware and PD graphics viewing
programs for viewing graphics images stored as GIF, TIFF, PCX, IMG,
PIC, etc. files. These viewing programs also are able to drive quite
a variety of graphics display devices: CGA, EGA, VGA, Hercules, etc.
Some of these viewing programs are menu driven, some are command file
driven and some are command line driven. However, among shareware or
PD programs there are very few TSR graphics screen capture programs to
be found and the display devices supported by those few are usually
limited to CGA, EGA and VGA. Those that do exist are indeed very
excellent, yet I am looking for something that I haven't yet found. I
am looking for two separate programs, one is a TSR graphics screen
capture program and the other is a graphics file viewer program. The
graphics screen capture program needs to store the graphics image in a
file format that the graphics file viewer program will read. The
graphics file viewer program needs to be command line driven. I am
looking for a pair of such programs that will both support at least
CGA, EGA, VGA and Hercules graphics cards. In essence, then, what I
am trying to locate is a pair of programs that will let me save a
graphics image on either a CGA, EGA, VGA or Hercules graphics screen
and then, later, view that image on either a CGA, EGA, VGA or Hercules
graphics screen using a command line driven graphics file viewer pro-
gram.
Let me write what I have found so far (I purposefully omit those many
excellent graphics file viewer programs that are menu or command file
driven and mention only those that are command line driven). There is
an excellent TSR graphics screen program called GEMCAP that saves a
graphics screen as an IMG file using either a CGA, EGA or VGA graphics
card, but, alas, it doesn't support a Hercules graphics card. Also,
there is an excellent command line driven graphics file viewer program
called PICEM that supports numerous graphics cards (including CGA,
EGA, VGA and Hercules) which will read PIC, PCX and GIF files.
Unfortunately, it doesn't read IMG files. Of course, there are
several programs which will readily convert a graphics file from one
format to another--but that is beside the point here. I know about
the commercial bit mapped editor programs--I am a registered owner of
one such program and it very well satisfies the conditions that I have
outlined above (except, even it does not support a command line driven
mode for viewing a graphics image, but rather, forces the user to use
a menu to select the desired operation).
If you know about a TSR screen capture program that supports CGA, EGA,
VGA and Hercules graphics, please let me know, or if you know of a
command line driven graphics file viewer program (other than the one
referred to above) that reads PIC, PCX, GIF, TIFF or IMG files, please
let me know also. Thanks.

Don't know about the screen capture programs (I believe there are programs to
capture in "BLOAD/BSAVE" format, and a commandline driven program that will
convert this to a more popular format such as GIF, available on BBSes).
In addition to PICEM, VUIMAGE PLUS can operate using commandline parameters
only and supports GIF, GIF89a and TIFF formats. You get VUIMAGE PLUS when
you register for VUIMAGE.
