[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] TeX

ornstein@tramp.Colorado.EDU (Jason Ornstein) (11/13/90)

I was wondering if anybody out there could suggest a version of Tex to
use for msdos? I have seen 2 versions available on the SIMTEL mirror
sight, but I don't know which would be worth getting. So, if you
could send me some input, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Get SBTEX. It is faster than DOSTEX and uses less memory. You'll need to find
the LATEX macros for yourself, though (e.g. in the DOSTEX package)

You'll also need to get some sort of viewer if you get sbTeX. DOSTeX comes
with a hercules graphics viewer, and a printing program for epson printers
(this printing program is also available seperately as DVIEPS.ARC). If you
have VGA graphics I would suggest getting DVIVGA (or is it VGADVI?), as it
comes with quite a few fonts. There is also DVIEW31, which works with CGA or
better, but it only comes with enough fonts to view the documentation DVI
file...you'll need to get some more somewhere else for real use. There's also
a viewer for Microsoft Windows, and probably one or two others. (I've had
experience with DVIEW31, as I use it on my 8088 CGA system, and with DVIVGA,
as my friend uses it on his 80386 VGA system. Both seem pretty good.)

This brings me to a couple of questions...like where CAN I get more fonts
for DVIEW? The FTP site suggested in the -READ.ME file on SIMTEL doesn't
seem to have the directories specified in that file. Also, where can I get
a DVI printer that works with an IBM ProPrinter? DVIEPS doesn't.
