josevela@mtecv2.mty.itesm.mx (Jose Angel Vela Avila) (11/28/90)

Hi, Does anybody knows something to erase non-DOS partitions on a hard disk ?

 Thanks in advance.....

FDISK wouldn't? (I can't recall off-hand--I dealt with this prob before--either
FDISK fixed it or a reformat did!!!!)

Use the Norton Utilities, 4.5 or later.

No. FDISK only deletes DOS partitions.

I ran into this problem a few years ago, and the only way I know of is
to do a low-level format, then use fdisk, then format. (if you have
data on that disk, back it up carefully before doing this!)

Note that low-level format has nothing to do with the dos FORMAT
program. If you don't have a low-level format program, all I can say
is contact the people you bought the drive from. (They (IMHO) should
have included it, but...)

There may exist programs to make this easier, but I don't know of any.

That's what I thought I'd remembered. So my conclusion is that it was
indeed a LLformat I did for them. It was a brand new HD so it didn't matter.

Oh well. One could always use a sector editor to erase the existence of the
partition and patch up the other one :-)

Thanks for clearing up my thoughts.

It may therefore be possible to use Norton's partition editor to mark
the non-dos partition as a dos partition and then use fdisk to delete
it.

Just an idea, but a potentially dangerous one! (dos may refuse to boot
if it can't understand what it is being told is a dos partition that
isn't)

[stuff deleted]

Try to use Diskmanager ( DM ) ,that program can erase non-dos partitions.

Try simtel - in pd1:<msdos.dskutl>, there's a program called edpart.arc,
which I've used before successfully to create/delete/modify non-DOS
partitions for installing MINIX partitions on few dozen classroom computers.

a non-dos partition can only be created by a different OS like OS/2
or by a Third party HD software vendors like disk Manager.

  1) Use the software with which the non-dos partition was created
and delete the partition (The hard part is to find out what software)
  2) Use FDISK to create the extended partition and then FORMAT iT!!!
The format will make sure that BAD sectors gets recorded.

I have used Zenith Data System's PART (FDISK equivalent) to delete both
MS-DOS and non-MS-DOS partitions. If you can borrow the utility from
someone who owns a ZDS computer, you can do what you want.

I tried to email you but keep getting domain errors. I found just what you
are looking for in the Usenet archives, it is called PARTITN. What you
can do with it is change the unknown partition into an MSDOS partition
and then use FDISK to delete the partition. It requires UUDECODE to process.
I found it and downloaded it to my machine for you, give me a path this
system can handle and its yours.
