[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] DMP201

cloader@kean.ucs.mun.ca (12/10/90)

I have just given DMP201 a trial with our laser printer hoping that
it would speedup troughput.

Well, it spools print files very nicely and release the computer
as the files print. However, the files are printed very slowly. The
spooler takes an awful lot of 'time out'. The net result is that
printing is actually very much slower!

System

Laser 8286 clone running at 19200 bps through serial port
XON/XOFF to a Laserjet II. Dumping EROFF print files.

DMP201 would be useful if it worked faster.

Any suggestions to cure this problem before I erase DMP201?

I'm not sure that was the intent. What it seems to do is allow you to
do other useful work with your computer rather than having it be a
dedicated printer driver. Since the dedicate mode is undoubtedly the
fastest, if your print load is so heavy that you run fulltime dedicated,
or if there is no other useful work to do with the system while waiting
for the output, then you may be better off without it.

In general people find that they start a print job and then do
something else, but that might not be what you need, or might take a bit
of getting used to. If printing is a roadblock to the next thing you
have to do I'd turn it off. If you have serial tasks (or a serial mind,
or a printer so noisy you can't think while it runs), then you may not
benefit.

Yes: get dmp203. It lets you control printing speed.
