Better still than making an offhand request that may end up with several kind netters duplicating each others' efforts for your benefit by rushing to email your request to you, how about doing the work yourself and getting it from an ftp site, or a BBS near you. At our site the extractors can be found in the /pc/pd2 directory. For .zip files use pkz110eu.exe. (* For gif programs at uwasa.fi see directory /pc/gif *) The wares are available by anonymous ftp from uwasa.fi, Vaasa, Finland, or by using our mail server (use the latter if, and only if you don't have anonymous ftp). If you are not familiar with anonymous ftp or mail servers, I am prepared send prerecorded instructions on request. (If you don't get the instructions from me within a few days, it will mean that your email address cannot be reached by a simple email reply, and you wouldn't be able to utilize the mail server anyway.) +--------------------------------------------------------------+ ! North American users please note. Maintainer of SIMTEL20 ! ! archives Keith Petersen has expressed a wish that you first ! ! try one of the many archives in the USA such as SIMTEL20 and ! ! wuarchive.wustl.edu instead of overseas sites to cut down ! ! the load on the overseas link. Please contact him for ! ! further information on SIMTEL20 usage. One of his email ! ! addresses is w8sdz@@wsmr-simtel20.army.mil. For the other ! ! users the reciprocal seems logical. First take a look at ! ! uwasa.fi archives (or some other European site). ! +--------------------------------------------------------------+ 14. ***** Q: I am interested to know if there exists a program for such and such purpose. Would you point me in the right direction. (This question also often occurs in the news postings.) A1: Most often the best answer is to look through file lists. We have several such lists which should together have quite a good coverage of the PD programs in circulation. These lists are /pc/INDEX, /pc/pd2/0dir-pd2, /pc/ts/0dir-ts plus /pc/ts/tsarc105.txt /pc/pd2/files-mm.zip (a good English speaking Finnish BBS), and /pc/pd2/simibm.arc (Simtel20 list). A2: How to find files on chyde.uwasa.fi: If you are looking for a particular program at chyde.uwasa.fi you should start by getting the following files: /pc/INDEX /pc/pd2/0dir-pd2 /pc/ts/0dir-ts /pc/ts/tsarc105.txt For seeing what is new in the /pc/pd2 and /pc/ts directories, get /pc/pd2/0news-pd2 /pc/ts/0news-ts A3: To save you the trouble of downloading all of those files if all you want is to search for one or two programs, you can use an index server maintained by Raymond Chen (rjc@math.princeton.edu). To obtain instructions, send email with any subject and containing the single word "help" to the above address. ...................................................................
