[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Something to note ...

HARISH@ITIVAX.BITNET (12/26/90)

The following was sent to me and I believe is of sufficient importance
to those on this list and hence am forwarding it.

===========================================================================
Lotus Development Corp. is planning on releasing a CD-ROM called "HOUSEHOLD
MARKETPLACE". This CD-ROM claims to contain data of about 120 million people
in the US. It lists income profiles, spending habits and marital status
among other things. This is believed to be an infringement of an individual's
privacy and rights. Lotus says that this CD-ROM will only be sold to
"legitimate businesses".

Now, if you don't want mail-order and other telemarketing outfits to bug
you, you'll have to write in to Lotus to explicitly exclude you from their
list.

You can write to:

        Lotus Development Corp.
        Attn: Market Name Referral Service
        55 Cambridge Parkway
        Cambridge, MA 02142

The Wall Street Journal had run an article in their November 13th's issue
(on page B1) headlined as:

"Lotus - New Program Spurs Fears Privacy Could Be Undermined."

FYI and regards,

I know that this is not the correct forum for this but
if this is true I do have a suggestion. I saw on 20/20
(I think) about a guy who sent a legal contract to all the
main telemarketing companies stating, that he would love to
be put on their list, and please call. However, to offset
the cost and maintenence of his personal phone system and
useage of his time they would be charged a fee of $100 for
each call. Acceptance of this contract was by making the
first call. Perhaps some scheme like this would work for
Lotus Development Corp. Are there any real [ v. virtual :) ]
lawyers out there that would volunteer an opinion, and a
contract? IMHO this is just another preditory action by
the company that believes marketing a better law suit is
better than marketing a better product! Please E-mail to
me, and I will summarize for the net.
