[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Networking with a Null Modem

rhys@batserver.cs.uq.oz.au (Rhys Weatherley) (01/21/91)

Hi all!

I would like to write software that is network-compatible, but unfortunately
I don't have access to a PC LAN. So what I want is a program or set of
programs that will do network stuff over a null modem cable to another
computer. I want it to do full DOS network pathnames, etc (network printers
are optional). Device drivers that just create extra drives by re-routing
requests to the other machine just won't cut it. Full file sharing and
other permissions would be VERY nice.

If anyone knows of such a beast (shareware or public domain preferably),
could they let me know via e-mail, and I'll summarise at a later time.

Rhys.

Yep, there is such an item. Information Modes, P.O. Drawer F,
Dention, TX 76202 sells a product called "The $25 Network" for $25 American
dollars. I allows file sharing between nodes, no dedicated server is nessary.
It runs over the serial ports via a null modem. It does all the things that
you would expect a net to do including e-mail. The only limits are no record
locking or netbios support. There is an implied limit in the number of
machines you can attach, although there is no limit, performance drops with
more than 3.
I picked this up to allow my roomate to use my HD since his machine
has only floppies. I would give you a report on it real use, but he has not
brought his machine from home yet.
