[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Ami bios turbo mode & QEMM

derek@sun4dts.dts.ine.philips.nl (derek) (01/29/91)

Thanks, David, for a great article. Perhaps Quarterdeck ought to employ
you to rewrite the manual!

You seem to be knowledgable about QEMM, so may I ask a question (and
anyone else on the net):

When I start up on my 386sx with AMI bios (late 89 date), the 'turbo'
light comes on. If QEMM then starts, it goes off. (i.e. if I don't
install QEMM it doesn't go off). I have put a pause in the batch file
so I can Ctrl-Alt-grey_minus to get the turbo mode back on again,
because if I let Desqview start, the Ctrl-Alt-grey_minus locks up the
system.

Now I suspect it's something to do with inclusion and exclusion zones,
perhaps with bios mapping or something - I don't really understand the
hardware aspects. I haven't run Optimize, because I have some 150
programs I use of and on, most under Desqview and that part of the
manual is confusing too - do they really mean that if programs run under
Desqview they always use the same memory areas, because that is what is
implied.

I'll stop rambling. If you have an idea what might be my problem, but
need more data, let me know which pages of a Manifest report are needed.

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards, Derek Carr

Hmm.. QEMM talks to the keyboard controller to toggle the A20 gate,
and perhaps this interferes with the Turbo-Mode bit, also toggled
via the keyboard controller. If this is a problem, then move the
motherboard jumper that disabled keyboard speed changing. I doubt that
you actually use it anyway.
