I would add Jove to this list. Jove is the Jonathan Payne's Own
Version of Emacs. Jove always handled the big files for me on MS-DOS.
If I remember correctly, its only constraint is that all the
*modified* lines should be kept in memory. Saving the file to disk,
once in a while in a long session, is the reasonnable thing to do
anyway, and flush the memory. Only in the rare instances I had to do
a systematic change on all the lines, I exited Jove, used sed, and
re-entered Jove.
