Does anyone know of a (PD) version of such a beast?

IF you have a CGA or EGA screen, or a VGA doing EGA graphics, look in
the PD1:<MSDOS.LASER> directory on Simtel. There is a small archive
called HPPS76.ARC which contains a graphics print-screen driver for
Laserjets which also works with a DeskJet 500. I've tried it with mine
and it works.
