[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Super VGA demos

tp1l+@andrew.cmu.edu (Thomas W. Pope) (03/19/91)

I am looking for some demonstration programs using the 640x480 256
color super VGA mode... I own a Video-7 1024i with 512k ram... I am
especially looking for rendered drawings in gif or other format...
Also, are there any animation programs in this resolution???

I'm interested too, but i haven't seen any.
I suspect this is because no SVGA modes seem to support more that one
graphics page, which makes animation, well, difficult.
Actually, include with that the 640x480x16 VGA mode too...(512k cards
should be able to handle 2 pages of that easily).

However, if i'm wrong (and i hope i am) let me know - it would be
nice to know if it can be done.

I recently received a catalog on a disk of the pictures (mostly GIF)
from a company called Event Horizons. The have a full disks of files
listing everything from monochrome to SVGA pictures. Many of them are
X rated, but they have a large number of Solar, Scenic and Movie pictures
also. I know that some of their files are animation files, but I'm not
sure what Graphics mode they are in. Event Horizons ads can be found in
the back of most PC magazines.

There's a nice rotating Jolt can animation using the graspart program
that's available on BBS's.

None of the BBS's I've been on have anything like this.. I have a
stong desire to get some more VGA /SVGA demos.. (or GOOD MCGA or EGA demos!)
If anyone knows of an FTP site.. that would be great. Thanks for your help..

The Jolt can and the rest of the GL animation files I've seen so far
are of low resolution. Even though it needs VGA (256 colors), the
pictures themselves are low res... compared to most of the GIF files
I've ftped. Are these GL files 640x480? I think the original poster
was asking for something to test his card at its highest quality.
Hence, might high res GIF pictures be a better choice than GL files?

On a different note, are there high res GL files (say 800x600 256
colors)? This resolution is higher than that of the TV (even if you
get close, you can't readily see the pixels like you do on a TV)
and GIF pictures of this resolution is of photographic quality.
A GL animation at this resolution would really be lifelike.
The highest resolution GL file I have is called "goblet4.gl".
This file is quite impressive but its staircasing is still quite
visible. Are there better once around?

Thomas.

I have seen a couple of 640x480x256 grasp animations, one is a pepsi
can swinging back and forth, the picture quality is good (like those
scanned gifs), but the content is boring, so I delete it after a
while. Some bbs should have this file.
