[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] gcc for DOS: can it be linked with other DOS-extenders?

fredb@qed.physics.su.OZ.AU (R. J. Bassett) (04/18/91)

We are planning to link some mostly-existing code, written in C,
to AutoCAD (tm Autodesk Inc) release 11, which runs with
Phar Lap Software's 386|VMM DOS-Extender/virtual memory manager.

Autodesk provide the AutoCAD Development System (tm) to do this,
but their documentation says we have to have either
	WATCOM C 386 (v 7.0+) or
	Metaware High C 386
as well as the Phar Lap DOS-extender utilities.

Does anyone know how feasible/possible it would be to use gcc
instead of the abovementioned rather expensive compilers?
Can we interface at assembler or link level?
Could we even use the Xenix 386 compiler (has MASM-compatible output)?
Is there another way of achieving what we want? (AutoCAD and the C
need to interchange data, but C does not need to call AutoCAD functions.
C is called repeatedly so "shelling out" of ACAD would be too slow.)

(If we get around the technical difficulties, I believe we can
solve any licensing problems.)
