Where I come from (midtown Toronto), we are served by 480 exchange - the numbers have only "48" in common, and differ in the last digit of the exchange number. -peter (yes, I worked for Bell Canada) bain

While walking through downtown La Jolla (a rich suburb or San Diego today) today, I found two offices and a jewelery store that still had their phone numbers painted on display in the form: GLenford 4 - xxxx instead of 454 - xxxx.

#R:wateng:-119200:inmet:14100021:000:513 inmet!andrew Jul 11 09:10:00 1984 When I called suburban Philly directory assistance to get my in-laws' home phone, they gave it to me as KI3-nnnn instead of 543-nnnn. In Pittsfield, MA, you can omit the first two digits of the exchange, ie. dial 2-nnnn instead of 442-nnnn. (Apparantly this was a concession to public uproar over being forced to dial two extra digits when All-Digit Dialing was instituted 20 years ago.) Many delivery trucks, ads, etc. still use the 5-digit form. Andrew W. Rogers ...{harpo|ihnp4|ima|esquire}!inmet!andrew
