[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] FTP directly to a PC

castello@remus.rutgers.edu (Vicente Castello) (04/21/91)

I am interested in finding some information that will enable me to
directly connect my pc to an ftp site. I want to transfer files to
my pc without having to download them to my account and then
download them to my pc. Any feedback, whether it be an e-mail or
posted reply, would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am interested
in hearing from those people, who have some experience in what I've
mentioned.

Thanks, in advance.

At my previous job we did exactly that. Each pc had an Execelan
ethernet board and attached to the ethernet. We used their software
to run tcp/ip and telneted and ftpd directly from the pc out to the
world. Later the software/hardware product was called Lan workplace
for DOS by Novell.

You also could use PC-NFS by sun? It lets you refer to nfs file
systems on your pc. Saves copying everything first. I've never
worked with this product.

I'm sure that any other tcp/ip product would also work.

I presume you have internet access, or you wouldn't ask.

Get an ethernet board for your PC.

We use the Western Digital WD8003E, mainly because they cost less
than 3COM, and seem to work fine. About $140 last time we bought one.

Get NCSA Telnet from zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu. It is public domain
telnet/ftp/lpr/lpq, source included.

If you want to do anonymous ftp, you will have to get your IP address
into a nameserver, beause many FTP sites do reverse lookup on all
incoming anonymous requests.
