A just posted utility, Free v1.3 has been updated to version 1.9 and is now
available at garbo.uwasa.fi in ~pc/incoming/free19.zip. I don't know if this
directory is readable but I assume that Timo (or whomever) will be placing
it in a dos utility directory soon.
Thanks to Bob Hardy, Free v1.9 is also available in the uploads directory
of wuarchive.wustl.edu in ~pub/msdos-uploads (this may be in caps and may
not even be the correct name, but it is under pub somewhere :).
He is currently trying to get into SIMTEL to post it there so it may be there
soon also.
Basically the new stuff from version 1.0 is:
* Bypasses drives that are unavailable and prints a message rather than
"Abort, Retry or Fail".
* Allows you to disable any message about non-responding drives.
* Selective checking of floppy drives A: or B:.
* Display of the drive type (network, local, substituted, vdisk, etc.).
* Added /h/? as switches to display a quick help.
* Added /n switch to disable printing the diagnostic code.
* Optionally displaying of a long version of the drive type. Drive type is
displayed as a single letter but in this area, it's displayed as the
actual full name of the drive (LAN Mgr, IBM PC LAN, SUBST'd, Local,
Bernoulli, etc.).
* Optionally displaying the sector size in bytes, cluster size in bytes and
the percentage of drive space in use in bytes.
* Finally reduced the executable back to under 10k by removing the floating
point code. Changed to: 100 - (avail / (total / 100)). It may not be
totally accurate, but it's close enough for work.
Some of the above improvements were in 1.3.
